Its typical composition includes approximately 1.0% carbon, 16–18% chromium, 1.0% manganese, 1.0% silicon, along with molybdenum, nickel, and trace amounts of sulfur. This steel grade is particularly valued in applications where high wear resistance and resistance to oxidation and corrosion are critical. Its mechanical properties include a tensile strength ranging from 850–1150 MPa, yield strength between 450–850 MPa, and hardness levels of 58–60 HRC under hardened conditions. Due to these qualities, Stainless Steel 440C is widely used in the manufacture of bearings, valves, and precision instruments, as well as in cutlery and food processing equipment where both strength and hygiene are essential.
