Stainless Steel 317L is the low-carbon variant of SS 317, which consists of chromium (18–20%), nickel (11–15%), and molybdenum (3–4%) with lower carbon to enhance weldability and resistance to sensitization. It possesses superior mechanical properties like high tensile strength, better corrosion resistance in acidic and chloride-containing environments, and good formability. The reduced carbon content reduces carbide precipitation, and hence SS 317L is best suited for welding and high-temperature applications without sacrificing corrosion resistance.
