With iron as the base, stainless steel 316L sheets and plates have a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), chromium (16–18%), nickel (10–14%), and molybdenum (2–3%). Excellent corrosion resistance is provided by this composition, especially in acidic and chloride-containing environments. The alloy has an elongation of 40% or more, a yield strength of about 170 MPa, and a tensile strength of about 485 MPa. At high temperatures, 316L retains its good mechanical strength and offers exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Because there is less chance of carbide precipitation during welding operations, its low carbon content improves weldability.
