Manganese steel has about 12–14% manganese with 1.0–1.4% carbon and balance iron. It provides excellent impact strength with tensile strength of 800–1100 MPa and yields within 400–600 MPa. When impacted or under pressure, it work-hardens to hardness values over 500 HB and yet remains tough. Elastic modulus is less than carbon steels but with excellent ductility and energy absorption properties. Manganese steel is hard to machine when in the work-hardened condition but can be welded and shaped prior to service.
