High Manganese Steel usually consists of 11–14% manganese and 1–1.4% carbon, and the rest as iron. The composition yields high impact strength and superior wear resistance. Tensile strength is 800–1100 MPa and a yield strength of 350–550 MPa. It work-hardens quickly to hardness levels above 500 HB. It has good ductility and toughness despite its hardness. It‘s hard to machine following hardening but weldable and formable in the annealed state. It‘s suitable for applications involving high impact because it has a self-hardening quality.
