Kovar is usually 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, and the remaining iron. It possesses a restricted coefficient of thermal expansion (~5 × 10⁻⁶/°C between 20–200°C) closely similar to borosilicate glass. It provides tensile strength of approximately 515–655 MPa and good dimensional stability. Kovar Foil is not magnetic and has structural stability when it is under vacuum and high temperature. It is readily formable, weldable, and brazable, hence can be easily joined with ceramics and glass. It has thermal expansion characteristics which find it particularly suitable for hermetic sealing in electronic packages.
