Invar is an iron-nickel alloy, normally having 36% nickel and 64% iron. Invar has moderate tensile strength (~490 MPa), yield strength (~270 MPa), and good dimensional stability. It is fairly easy to machine and is resistant to deformation through thermal cycles. While not corrosion-resistant, it is acceptable for use in protected environments. Its properties are maintained over a broad temperature range, even in cryogenic applications.
